The exhibition ACCENTISMS runs until January 28, 2018.<\/p>\n

ACCENTISMS<\/strong>
\nLawrence Abu Hamdan, Nicholas Bussmann & Natascha Sadr Haghighian, Edith Dekyndt, Annja Krautgasser, Ali Meer Azimi, Ute M\u00fcller, Ulrich Nausner, Angel Nevarez & Valerie Tevere, Natascha Sadr Haghighian<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Latin word accentus is derived from adcantus, meaning \u201cwhat is added to the song\u201d \u2013 a poetic surplus to syllables, words and sen\u00adtences in order to emphasize them. We also speak of accent when these sound shapes, the intonation patterns and rhythms from a pre\u00adviously learned language are integrated into a newly learned one and imbue it with a distinctive tonal coloration.<\/p>\n

Accents are events. They are articulated and registered simultaneously, spoken and heard at once. Individual idiosyncrasies of speech are equal\u00adly process-based. They change as we follow the personal maps of our lives, and are affected by the different places in which we live and the different people with whom we speak.<\/p>\n

Thus by virtue of their complexity, individual accents always clash with simplistic concepts of identity. Yet in everyday life, speech idio\u00adsyn\u00adcra\u00adsies are often equated automatically with one\u2019s place of birth and class background, and are therefore subject to judgments and dis\u00adcri\u00admi\u00adna\u00adtion. In contrast, art insists that \u201cwhat is added to the song\u201d \u2013 colora\u00adtion, shadings and tonalities \u2013 be experienced as an engine of beauty and complexity.<\/p>\n
