Hello everyone,<\/p>\n

My name is Rabbya Naseer and I\u2019m writing to invite you to a pre-exhibition public event, titled: Learn to Dabke with me, will you?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

<\/em><\/strong>This is a Dabke <\/em>learning-session, open to public for free on<\/strong> October 23 and 24, 2025: 12pm to 6pm (you can come and join at any time during these hours and stay for as long\/short as you like)<\/strong> at the TAXISPALAIS.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m not a Dabke <\/em>dancer but during these two days, I will be learning the steps to Dabke<\/em>, with the help of a curated selection of online Dabke<\/em>-lessons. And I\u2019m wondering: if you would like to join me, so that we may learn together<\/em>?<\/p>\n

Dabke <\/em>is an Arabic word meaning \u201cto stomp your feet.\u201d My amateur understanding is that this folk dance originates from Bilad al-Sham (commonly known as \u201cthe Levant\u201d region, in colonial language). Dabke <\/em>is essentially a communal dance: arms interlocked to form a human chain, feet striking the earth in unison\u2014a rhythmic chorus of stomps, taps, jumps, and kicks. It is commonly believed that this centuries old, communal \u201cstomping of the feet\u201d originated in this region at a time when village homes had mud-and-straw roofs. These mud-roofs would naturally develop cracks over time, and people in the neighborhood would gather to collectively stomp on the roofs in order to fill these cracks [accompanied by the chanting of \u201cAla Dal-ouna<\/em>\u201d (meaning: help us\/assist us\u2014these words echo in several variations of the Arabic song(s) Ala Dal-ouna<\/em>)]. Over time, this method of repairing a neighbor\u2019s roof transformed into Dabke<\/em>, an expression of communal love, care, unity, and strength\u2014performed not only to celebrate joy, but also to resist oppression, especially for Palestinians.<\/p>\n

And so, I ask again, will you join me in learning \u201cto stomp the feet\u201d together<\/em>?<\/p>\n
