With Cana Bilir-Meier, Z\u00fchal Bilir-Meier, G\u00fcrsoy Do\u011fta\u015f and Nina Tabassomi<\/strong><\/p>\n In 2020, the sister of the poet Semra Ertan, Z\u00fchal Bilir-Meier, and her niece, Cana Bilir-Meier, published a selection of 82 poems in German and Turkish from a collection of more than 350 poems in the volume Mein Name ist Ausl\u00e4nder \/ Benim Ad\u0131m Yabanc\u0131<\/em>, which quickly sold out. This week, the new edition with an extended preface came out. At the TAXISPALAIS, Cana Bilir-Meier and Z\u00fchal Bilir-Meier will present the book, read selected poems, and talk with the curators of the exhibition Gurbette Kalmak \/ Bleiben in der Fremde<\/em> G\u00fcrsoy Do\u011fta\u015f and Nina Tabassomi about the powerful poetry, the context in which the poems were written, and the relevance of Semra Ertan\u2019s thinking and political activism.<\/p>\n Semra Ertan was 15 years old, when she was brought to Germany by her parents who were already residing there as migrant workers. It is upon her arrival in Kiel (1971) that she begins with her poetry to comprehend the contradictory, sometimes unspoken expectations of her surroundings, replete with social injustices and gender in\u00adequalities commensurate with her status as a \u201cforeigner\u201d that she is repeatedly subjected to. Semra Ertan wrote her poem Mein Name ist Ausl\u00e4nder (My Name is Foreigner)<\/em> when she was only 24 years old in an intensifying right-wing populist climate in the FRG. The more virulent the racism in Germany swells, the more active Ertan becomes in her anti-racist work. End of May 1982, on the corner of Simon-von-Utrecht-Stra\u00dfe\/Detlev-Bremer-Stra\u00dfe in Hamburg, she immolates herself and passes away two days later. In her statements to the public, she demands: \u201cI would like foreigners not only to have the right to live as human beings, but also the right to be treated as human beings. That\u2019s all. I want people to accept and love each other. And I want them to think about my death.\u201d The demand ends with her poem Mein Name ist Ausl\u00e4nder<\/em>.<\/p>\n Free admission.
